Deliah Ann McDuffee was born in Bethesda, Arkansas in 1929, and one of seven children born to William Jefferson McDuffee (b.1889- d.1969) and Leora D McDuffee (b.1896- d.1972)

She had two brothers, Luke McDuffee of Little Rock, and W.J. McDuffee of Texas, and four sisters Mrs. Daphna Brightwell, Mrs. Charlene Mann, Mrs. Lorene Wilson, all of the Batesville area, and Mrs.Willene Bray, of Mount Pleasant.

On February 7, 1948, at the age of 18, Ann married James Andrew Barton, and they settled in Batesville, Arkansas. Producing one daughter, Elizabeth Andrea Barton and a son, James.

Ann was employed by the Trevathan Printing Company of Batesville, and helped out as a counter assistant in a small grocery store within the grounds of Batesville airport. She was also a member of the Baptist Church.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the fate of Mrs Barton as the following article relates:

"On July 31,1964, Famous Country music singer Jim Reeves's plane crashed near Nashville upon returning from a business trip to Batesville, Arkansas. It has been recently revealed that the authorities deliberately mis-directed the searchers away from the crash site as they frantically searched for a mysterious briefcase that was on board. Rumours abounded that the military was involved, and Reeves had the unique distinction of being allowed to land his aircraft at airbases which where otherwise restricted for the public use of. Jim also earlier stated that he saw JFK's accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, in some of the clubs that he performed in, in June 1963.

Ann would have been the last person to see Jim Reeves board the plane with the briefcase. Somebody must have been waiting at Nashville for him to deliver the case.

How's this ties in with Ann's fate is that a short while after Jim's crash, Ann was fatally injured on the Sunday Morning of August 23, 1964 in (what was thought at the time), a one-car accident on Highway 167 near the top of Ramsey Mountain Drive. She was 34.

Sheriff John Davis said her automobile ran off the Highway and turned over. Mrs Barton was thrown out and the vehicle fell on her. She was dead on arrival at a Batesville hospital.

Ann's family have always maintained that she was murdered, as debris from another car was found on the road at the crash site, but not revealed until later.

Ann's case is mentioned in a book entitled "Hit List" by Richard Belzer.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, August 25th, 1964, at 10a.m. in the Batesville Funeral Home Chapel.
