William served as a Major & Co-Pilot / Command Pilot on B-24D #41-23785, 345th Bomber Squadron, 98th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.
He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.
The Command Pilot, which William served as, sat in the Co-Pilot's seat and was in Command of the bombing mission and also of the entire group of Bombers within a flight formation.
B-24D #41-23785 took off from Benina Base in Libya on a bombing mission to Calabria Airdrome, Italy. After successfully dropping their bombs they collided, for an unknown reason, with B-24D #41-11806 while returning from the mission. Both planes crashed into the Mediterranean sea.
William was declared "Missing In Action" in this collision during the war.

He was awarded the "Silver Star", Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. Service # O-022037
