Obituary - The community was saddened to learn of the death of Charles H. Werle on Thursday, January 20.
Mr. Werle, who had been ill with a heart condition since his appendicitis operation in May 1943, suffered a stroke on Thursday and was taken to the Huntington Hospital where he died a short time after arriving.
Mr. Werle, who was 56 years old, was born in Elmira, Ontario, Canada on August 28, 1887. He came to Commack in 1925 and had been a resident here ever since. He was very well known in Commack, having been proprietor of the Commack General Store for eighteen years up to the time of his death. He also acted as Commissioner of the Commack Fire Department for eight years, and was President of the Commack Cemetery for three years.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Clara Werle; a son, Dr. Carl Werle who is a lieutenant in the armed service and is at present stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland; a daughter, Mrs. Alan Payne of Blue Point, L.I.; two brothers, Adolph Werle of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada and Herman Werle of Beachburg, Ontario, Canada; two sisters, Mrs. Alton Schaman of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and Mrs. Herbert Kaster of Petersburg, Ontario, Canada; and two grandchildren, Alan Payne Jr., and Carl Payne of Blue Point, L.I.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, January 23, at 2 o'clock at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, at East Northport, the church of which he had been president for fifteen years and had resigned on January 10, the week before his death. Burial took place in the Commack Cemetery.
