Barbara Louise Smith Scherle, 70, of Council Bluffs died Sept. 10 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

She was born Nov. 28, 1932, in rural Macedonia to Thomas and Lois Hatswell Smith. She graduated from high school. She was a clerical worker for various companies including Pottawattamie County Auditor's office. She was a member of Busy Fingers Club, Fancy Do-Er's and St. Patrick's Church. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Mrs. Scherle and her husband, Albert, were married 51 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lois Smith in 1994, Thomas Smith in 1959; son, Patrick, in 1992; sister, Frances Bergen, in 1980; and brother, Donald Smith, in 1999.

Survivors in addition to her husband include daughter, Jane Hoffer and husband, Michael, of Lincoln, Neb.; son, Timothy and wife, Molly, of Sioux City; grandchildren, Chris Hoffer and special friend, Elisa Gutierrez, of Colorado, Dan Hoffer of Lincoln, Neb., Claire, Stephen and Colin Scherle of Sioux City; sisters, Catherine Carder and husband, Thomas, of Red Oak and Beverly Boileau and husband, Leo, of Glenwood; brothers, Lewis Smith of Council Bluffs, Thomas I. Smith Jr. and wife, Marj, of Humbolt; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Smith, of Macedonia.

Visitation will be Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. John O. Bertogli officiating. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at Queen of Apostles Hall.

Memorials may be offered to MICAH House.
