James Anderson, 82, of 19 Central Ave., Wakefield, a co-author of machine shop texts and a former teacher, died Thursday at South County Hospital. He was the husband of Emma J. (Flegg) Anderson.
Born in London, a son of the late Charles and Alexandrina M. (Webster) Anderson, he came to Rhode Island 15 years ago. He previously had lived in Fairlawn, N.J.
Mr. Anderson had taught mechanical arts at Queens Vocational High School, New York City, for 35 years, retiring in 1972.
He began learning his trade at 14, when he became an indentured apprentice in London.
He was a co-author of Machine Tool Operation No. 1 and No. 2, and Shop Theory, which was printed in several languages by the McGraw-Hill Inc. Publishing Co.
He worked in U.S. machine shops for 15 years before he became a teacher of mechanical arts. He received his educational training at New York State University.
He was a director of machine shop training at the Kollsman Instrument Corp., makers of precision aircraft instruments, and he also worked at National Biscut Co. before he became a teacher.
He was a 60-year member of the Doric Lodge 80, West Hoboken, N.J. He was affilated with the Hope Lodge 25, F&AM, Wakefield, and the Unity Chapter 12 R.A.M., Wakefield. He was a member of the American Federation of Teachers Association, a trustee of the Fairlawn (N.J.) Library Asociation and a director of the South Kingstown Library Association.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Janice A. Wilke of Wakefield, and two grandchildren.
