James Edward Anderson, 71, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016, at Heritage Hospice Center. He was born May 15, 1944, in Perry County, Indiana, to the late James and Martha (nee Tanner) Anderson.

He graduated with a Math and Physics degree from Oakland City College, where he was also the first school basketball mascot, Chief Mighty Oak. He later attended Kent State University, Indiana University and the University of Evansville, where he received his Master's degree. He taught school for two years at Pioneer High School in Royal Center, IN, followed by 38 years at North Posey High School in Poseyville, IN, where he was the head of the Math Department and on the teachers' negotiating team. He was selected by students (who affectionately knew him as 'Jim Ed') at North Posey to receive the GE Teacher of the Year award twice, and he also received the Indiana State Teachers Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jim always stayed busy. He spent many summers inspecting corn, soybean and wheat fields for certified seed for Indiana Crop Improvement and Pioneer Seeds and in later years trained the new inspectors. During tax season for 35 years, he worked evenings and weekends for West Tax Service and also did the taxes of many family members and friends. He helped on two dairy farms, milking cows and harvesting crops. He served as a crops judge at the 4-H Fair and a trustee at Scott Township General Baptist Church. In his spare time, he loved to farm and hunt on his land in Tell City, garden, watch nature programs, play euchre, work Sudoku, tutor his grandchildren in math, vacation with his grandchildren and watch the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Dodgers and IU basketball. Jim's greatest gift and purpose was that he was always available to help anyone, in any way he could, with anything big or small. He had a great sense of humor, entertaining all around him with his nonsensical words and phrases and his favorite number, 47.

Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, three children and their spouses, four grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers-in-law, 8 nieces and nephews, and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:00AM, Friday, March 4, 2016, at Bluegrass United Methodist Church Chapel Campus, 14200 Petersburg Road, officiated by Rev. Doug Heiman, with burial in Deer Creek Baptist Cemetery in Tell City at 2:00PM. Friends may also visit Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road and Friday from 9:00 AM to service time at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gilda's Club, 5740 Vogel Road, Evansville, IN 47715. Condolences may be made online at AlexanderNorthChapel.com.
