He was born and reared in Franklin. His mother was 90 years old when she died. She was a dressmaker and his father a carriage painter. In the early days he was a trainman. He worked for the L&N Middle Tennessee and Franklin Interurban. Eighteen years was his stint on the railroad and he served as brakeman, flagman, conductor and engineer. Then in 1920 he went into the restaurant business in Franklin. From the restaurant business he went into selling and opened the Variety Shop. Fishing is his hobby.
