David "Allan" Firmage
1918 - 2016

Early Life: Allan was born February 15,1918, in Nephi, Utah, to David Patterson and Florence Ivy Jones Firmage. His family moved to Spanish Fork, Utah, when he was in grade school and he always considered it his hometown. His father was involved in establishing stores for the J.C. Penney company. He spent many hours assisting his Dad in the store which was a great motivator for him to attend college and expand his horizons.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Allan attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. That summer, he married his eternal companion, Margaret Felt, of Salt Lake City. They immediately moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he completed his Master's degree in Civil Engineering at MIT. They moved to Utah in 1955; he accepted a position as a professor at BYU in the fledgling College of Engineering. Allan remained at BYU as a professor of structural engineering until his retirement in 1983. He was active during his professional life in the American Society of Civil Engineers, serving on the national Board of Directors and selected as an Honorary Member in 1998. He was involved in numerous other professional organizations, selected as Utah Engineer of the Year, and as 1982, BYU Distinguished-Faculty Lecturer. Allan served in many LDS Church callings including BYU Bishop, High Councilor and supported Margaret in her multitude of church and civic activities. He and Margaret were devoted companions, always happy to be together in all their activities. Margaret's death in 2000 was very difficult for him and the family is happy that he now has rejoined her. David Allan Firmage died February 26, 2016, at the age of 98.
