George Helmer III was the son of Lt. George Helmer II (1740-1823) and Margaret (Myer) Helmer (1751-1818), who were married on 9 Jan 1770, at Stone Arabia, Montgomery, New York. He had at least eight siblings.

George Helmer III married Elizabeth Thum (1772-1832) in Jan. 1796, at German Flatts, Herkimer, New York. Her parents were Melchior Thum (1744-1804) and Anna Elizabeth Weaver (1745-1838), of Herkimer County, New York. George and Elizabeth had eight children in 19 years.

In the spring of 1816, George settled at Jeffersonville, Ind. Later he moved to Harrison County, Ind., where he was in merchandising. George owned flat boats and hauled corn, wheat, and pork to New Orleans. Returning from one of these trips he was robbed and murdered.
