Mrs. Esta H. Blair, 69, nationally recognized for her contributions to tuberculosis nursing, died Monday at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, after an illness of several weeks.
The widow of Carl P. Blair, she spent most of her adult life in nursing before her marriage late in life.
At the time of her retirement from nursing, she was head of nursing services for tuberculosis patients at Mt. Sinai Hospital's Lowman Pavilion.
A native of Delaware County, she was a 1918 graduate of Cleveland's old Glenville Hospital and served as a head nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during World War I. After the war's end, she was a staff nurse for Cleveland's division of health and later a private duty nurse in Cleveland.
In 1923, she became a graduate student and head nurse at Woman's Hospital, New York City. She became an instructor in nursing at City Hospital, Cleveland, in 1926 and later that year was appointed director of nursing service and the school of nursing at Glenville Hospital.
In 1931, she returned to City Hospital there as supervisor of nursing at Lowman Pavilion, the Mt. Sinai Hospital's tuberculosis nursing unit.
She made studies of the different types of face masks for protection of personnel working with persons affected with tuberculosis and developed one made of layers of cheesecloth which was considered a substantial contribution toward safety.
For that and other contributions, she was elected to life membership in the National Tuberculosis Association.
In 1941, while working at Mt. Sinai, she competed work on a bachelor of science degree from Western Reserve University, Cleveland. From 1946 to 1949, she was a nurse specialist in tuberculosis for the U.S. Veterans Administration.
She then returned to Mt. Sinai Hospital as director of nursing and four years later resumed the head nursing post at the Lowman Pavilion.
She and Mr. Blair, who died in 1959, were childhood sweethearts and they renewed their acquaintance in 1953 while she was at Mt. Sinai. She and her husband were married in 1957.
Since residing in Muncie, she had conducted a workshop in tuberculosis nursing at North Dakota State Tuberculosis Hospital.
Active in the First Presbyterian Church of Muncie, Mrs. Blair was a charter member of American Legion Post 130 at Cleveland.
Survivors are Mrs. Harry Friddle and Robert Buffington, Muncie; Mrs. Helen Poole, South Bend; Mrs. Michael Kulchyki, Ambridge, Pa.; Mrs. James Bell, in Florida, Harry Bennett, Anderson, Farrell McNett, Alexandria, and Harrell McNett, San Francisco, all of whom are nieces and nephews.
