Alice Duff Lynch of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on September 29th, 2015 at the South Roanoke Nursing Home after protracted illness. She was born in Appalachia, Virginia, on March 13, 1940, and grew up in Port Gibson, Mississippi.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harrison Ingalls Sullivan, Jr., of Appalachia, Virginia; her mother, Evelyn Nelson Drake Sullivan, of Port Gibson, Mississippi; and her brothers, Harrison Ingalls Sullivan, III of Appalachia, Virginia, and Joseph Drake Sullivan of Lafayette, Louisiana.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, William Joseph Lynch, Jr. (Colonel, retired, USAF); her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Freday, of Floyd, Virginia; her son-in-law, Scott Allen Freday of Roanoke, Virginia; her granddaughter, Evelyn Joy Freday; her sister, Mildred Myers Sullivan Thomson of Winchester, Virginia; and her brother, Winbourne Magruder Drake Sullivan of Liberty, Mississippi; as well as two sisters-in-law, Suzanne Slover Sullivan of Liberty, Mississippi, and Sue Sims Sullivan of Lafayette, Louisiana; her brother-in-law, Jerome Peter Thomson of Knoxville, Tennessee; three nieces, Lyn Gurney of Liberty, Mississippi, Susan Shelley of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Sandy White of Lafayette, Louisiana; three nephews, Walter Jerome Peter Thomson of Annadale, Virginia, Gib Sims of San Francisco, California, and Stuart Sims of Modesta, California; as well as several great nieces and nephews.

Alice taught for 24 years as a French and Spanish teacher in Missouri, Illinois, Virginia and Mississippi. She graduated from Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi and attended the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France and Cemanauac Language Community in Cuernavaca, Mexico. She lived in Japan for three years with her husband, who was in the Air Force and her daughter, Mary.
Her love of travel led her to visit countries in Europe, South America and Asia. In the past few years she has visited her daughter in Japan, South America, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. She worked for 9 years for Goodspeed Learning Consultants in Roanoke, as a French and Spanish tutor as well as a volunteer with the Immigration and Refugee Service as an English tutor.
She will be remembered as a special friend to Charlotte Wilkens, Betty Adamson, and Gisela Bacher. Her greatest friendships were those of her daughter, Mary, her granddaughter, Eve, and her husband, Bill. Her beautiful daughter, Mary, was the joy of her life with her ebullient personality, beautiful voice, and wonderful zest for life and adventure.

The greatest joy in the final years of her life was her grandbaby, Eve, who brought smiles to her face, kisses to her cheeks, artwork to her walls, and laughter to her days. Most importantly, her husband, Bill, had a keen mind and love of conversation that made the 43 years of marriage a blessing.

Alice was a lover of blue birds, good books, foreign films, exercise, travel and life. Her passing is to be looked upon as another adventure in the mystery of the universe.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Refugee and Immigration Service of Roanoke, Virginia, and Doctors without Borders.
