James McMurry married Elizabeth Moore and they had 10 children, 4 of which are buried in this cemetery; Amos McMurry, Hartman McMurry, Melissa McMurry Barnes VanNatten, and Nancy King.
James McMurry was one of the original 3 white settlers to homestead in Lake Township in Harvey County, Kansas in 1871. The others were John Gorgas and James Patterson.
From the Burrton, Kansas newspaper, The Graphic, dated July 21, 1887;
"Old Mr. McMurray, father of the McMurray boys, died quite suddenly yesterday of summer complaint. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in this portion of Kansas."
(Note that summer complaint was an old term for a problem most associated with spoiled milk, and was more common in infants.)
