Visitation will be Thursday 6-8PM at Mount olivet Funeral Home and Friday from 12-2PM at the Woodmont Christian Church.


ALFORD Helen Tanley - born October 18, 1935, in Madison, Tennessee, died September 11, 2006. Preceded in death by her mother Grace Johnson Tanley and father George A. Tanley. Survived by husband William C. Alford, Jr., daughter Allison Alford Fontenot (Patrick), son David Tanley Alford (Melissa), grandson David Addison Alford, sister Bobbie Henley, and many close nieces and nephews. Helen attended Issac Litton High School, and received her BS in Nursing from Vanderbilt School of Nursing. While in school, she was a member and president of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority also elected a member of Sigma Theta Tau, nursing honor society. She worked many years as an instructor in Pediatric Nursing at Vanderbilt and also earned a Masters Degree in Nursing from Vanderbilt. Helen was an avid gardener and long time member of Gateway Acres Garden Club, as well as a certified flower show judge. She was a long time member of Woodmont Christian Church and an active member of their Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a life member of Cheekwood and a member of the Centennial Club. She was a former board member and current advisory board member of Harding Academy, and she was past president of the Nashville Academy of Medicine Auxiliary. Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, September 15, 2006, at 2PM from the Woodmont Christian Church with Dr Gary Straub officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow in historic Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville. Family and friends to serve as pall bearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Helen Tanley Alford Scholarship Fund at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing or the charity of your choice. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 6-8PM at Mount Olivet Funeral Home and Friday from 12-2PM at the church
