Josephine was born at Detroit, Michigan, January 11, 1869 to John and Catherine Mathes Chateau. She was a dressmaker before her marriage on November 25, 1896 to Joseph Mathew Ackermann. Her death, caused by breast cancer, at the age of forty-five left five children, the youngest, Germaine, was five years of age.
