Josephine M. Barrett, 91, Cannon Ball, North Dakota, ended her work here on earth and began her journey to the spirit world on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at IHS Hospital, Fort Yates. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 9, 2016, at St. James Episcopal Church, Cannon Ball with the Rev. Canon John Floberg officiating. A wake is scheduled for 5:00 PM, Tuesday March 8, 2016, in the Youth Activity Center, Cannon Ball. Burial will be in Brave Bull Family Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

Josephine Mabel Brave Bull was the third child born to John and Eva (Kuntz) Brave Bull on March 6, 1924, in Cannon Ball, North Dakota. As a child she lived along the Missouri River and Cannon Ball River in a tent. Her family raised horses and cattle she grew up in a time of change. She attended Pierre Indian Boarding School. As a young woman, Josie went to Seattle, Washington with a group of young women to work as a welder during the war years. When she returned to North Dakota, she began her lifelong profession as a nurse’s aide with 10 years at Bismarck Hospital and 21 years at Fort Yates Indian Health Services.

Josie attended the Episcopal Church in Cannon Ball and Fort Yates parishes. Josie loved her family and they were her strength in life. She spent time visiting her brothers and sisters and their families. She loved gardening and caring for houseplants. Josie loved to go rummage sales and secondhand stores; she was always looking for things for her family and extended family.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Eagle and Sharon Olson, both of Fort Yates, and ViAnn Martinez, Mandan; one son, Jay (Deloris) Stoltz, Harvey, North Dakota. Josephine had a loving relationship with each of her 11 grandchildren; Geralynn, Clara, Garon, Loren, Heather, Jovan (Blossom), Sierra, Turquoise, Gabriel, Juan, and Jill; 17 great-grandchildren, Austin, Bethany, Travis, Summer, Amanda, Randi, Mikalo, Carly, Patience, Paxton, Chloe, Xavier, Blaine, Marshall, and Brett; and seven great-great-grandchildren, Heleigh, Lexon, Haleigh, Andrew, Ava, Ivory, and Josiah; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Helen Thunder Hawk and Lena Tiokasin.

Josie will now join her parents John Brave Bull and Eva Kuntz Brave Bull; her husband, Richard Barrett; three brothers John, Frank and George Brave Bull, three sisters, Annie Thunder Hawk, Susan Brave Bull, and Florence Brave Bull; son George Gilbert Eagle; two grandson Raymond Molash and George Donovan Eagle; and many nephews and nieces.
