Services for long-time educator and world traveler, Virginia Clayton Gentry, 89, of Luthor Manor Village, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Smith Funeral Chapel. Donald D. Powers will officiate. Burial at the Barkley Cemetery, New London, MO.
Miss Gentry died at 8:55 p.m., May 8, 1991, at the Hannibal Regional Hospital.
She was born April 26. 1902, in Ralls Co., MO. to Richard Henry and Anne Neal Gentry.
Survivors include 1 sister, Marietta Gentry Clayton, Hannibal; 5 nieces; 5 nephews; several great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Miss Gentry taught at Eugene Field School, Hannibal, before beginning her career in Hawaii, where she taught at Kamehameha School for Girls from 1937 - 1967. This was a private school for girls, grades 7-12.
She was in Hawaii during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, and spent the war years there. As an American Red Cross and USO volunteer, she entertained many of the Missouri service personnel. A 1983 Courier Post article about her career in Hawaii states she and Dorothy Martin, another teacher from Hannibal, spent a lot of time with Hannibal personnel in the service, such as Otis Howell, Dick Youse, Bert Richmond, Tom Benney, Joe Holt, Billy Reger, Joe Driskill, John Mac Turner, and Orland Yates.
Miss Gentry was also a world traveler, who had taken many trips to Asia, Europe, South America, as well as North America.
She was member of Arch Street United Methodist Church, Hannibal Heritage Chapter of the D.A.R., and the Hannibal Hospital Auxiliary.
Miss Gentry attended McMurray College in Jacksonville and was a graduate of Iowa State University. She did graduate work at schools in Colorado, Washington, and Hawaii.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to the Medical Center of Northeast Missouri (currently Hannibal Regional Hospital)
