Samuel Littler Metcalfe Jr., 79, of Leesburg, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and Realtor, died at home Sept. 22.

He was born March 30, 1927, at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Samuel L. Metcalfe Sr. and the late Helen Metcalfe. He joined the Army in 1944 and was stationed in Berlin after the war.

Col. Metcalfe received a bachelor's degree in biology from Fordham University in 1951 and began his career in the Army. In 1952 he served in Korea, where he was wounded. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry's Badge and a Purple Heart.

He was awarded his Airborne wings in 1954 and served as a platoon and battery leader of airborne artillery units. During the Berlin Wall Crisis in 1961, he was stationed in West Germany.

Col. Metcalfe received a master's in personnel administration from George Washington University in 1968. He returned to Korea in 1969, then served in the Pentagon from 1970 until he retired in 1972. He worked as a real estate agent until 1990.

His son Christopher J. Metcalfe preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Joyce Metcalfe of Leesburg; two sons, Samuel L. Metcalfe III in Scotland, and Jonathan H. Metcalfe of Arlington; a daughter, Anne Metcalfe in Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Col. Metcalfe was buried in North Lyme Cemetery in Lyme, Conn.
