On 1 Jan. 1845, he married Sarah Ramsey Dilliner, daughter of Augustine and Elizabeth (Jolly) Dilliner who came to Indiana from Green Co., PA. In 1850, Wills and Sarah lived in Union Township, Rush County, Indiana. from about 1853-1858, they lived in Marion County, and in 1858, Willis bought land in Tipton County where they lived the rest of their lives. Willis was a farmer and stock raiser. A quote from his obituary attests to his character: "Mr. Butler's life was an example of philanthropy, christianity and love. Since 1855 he had been a true christian, always ready to speak a good word, and do a good deed for down-trodden humanity. Always willing to sacrifice himself for the good of others."
