He was a native of Haywood County and was the son of the late John Wilson and Hester Minerva Lowe Messer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edna Belle Messer, who died June 6, 2003; two grandsons, Lane and Keith Hunter; one brother and three sisters.
He was a retired pipe welder with Daniels Construction and Miller Plumbing. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during WWII in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Waynesville VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. He was a member of Barberville Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Roslyn Hunter and her husband, Bob, of Asheville, and Janice Bradley and her husband, Bill, of Hendersonville; one son, Gene Wilson Messer and his wife, Marsha, of Little Rock, Ark.; one brother, Loyd Wilson Messer of Little Rock; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barberville Baptist Church. The Rev. G. W. Jameson will officiate. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW Post 5202 and the American Post 47.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
The members of the Haywood County Bear Hunters Association will serve as pallbearers.
