MARION -- Fannie Freeman Mautz passed away at her home in Marion County on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003.

She was born on Dec. 30, 1901, the daughter of Charles Benjamin Freeman and Ella Bell Redd of Marion County, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Walter A. Mautz, her daughter, Rosemary M. Wagner (Tom) and a nephew, Charles Allen Mautz.

She is survived by her son, Charles Edward (Erma Jean), Marion; a son-in-law, Tom Wagner of Edison; eight grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A devoted mother and grandmother, she loved the young family members and enjoyed cooking gourmet meals for all to enjoy. Holiday meals especially were a treat for all family members and her "special birthday cakes" were a joy to the recipient at his or her birthday party.

Her artistic abilities were evident throughout her home and she always had her door open to family members and guests with the smell of fresh baked dinner rolls wafting from her kitchen stove.

She was a long time member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Marion.

During the early years of her adult life, she taught Morral and Pleasant schools (her alma mater). She operated the "Mautz Tea Room" at her home from 1929 to 1934, during the Depression years, serving small special groups the finest of finished dishes and desserts.

She loved to work in her yard and garden and with her house plants, at one time having more than 300 elementary grades at both African Violets in the windows of her home. Each summer the colorful plants made her lawn a paradise on Earth.

Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Marlene LaChat at 1 p.m. Friday in the Marion Cemetery.
