H.L. Allen Funeral At Weatherford
Funeral services for Dr. Harvey L. Allen, a former superintendent of the Carnegie school, were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Weatherford. The former superintendent, a veteran Oklahoma educator, died last Sunday at his home in Los Angeles.
Allen composed the music and wrote the words of the local school song, "Carnegie Highschool". His last visit to Carnegie was two years ago when he attended the annual alumni homecoming.
He served as superintendent of the Carnegie schools form 1919 to 1922. Allen was superintendent here when the old 3 story highschool building was erected.
He was born in Bates county, Mo. He moved with his family to a homestead near Leedey in 1899. In 1903 he enrolled in the academy of the old Southwestern Normal which had just been established by the territorial legislature at Weatherford. He was a member of the first Southwestern football team in 1905 and was a campus leader until his graduation from the two-year teachers' normal school in 1909.
Dr. Allen taught in a number of state public schools and was superintendent at Sentinel and Carnegie. He was president of Keen's Business college at Elk City and president of Findley college, Findley, Ohio, and in the early 1920‘s was a member of the Southwestern faculty at Weatherford.
A graduate of the University of Oklahoma and Tulsa university, he organized the "30-Year Club" at Southwestern in 1940, establishing the college's annual October homecoming. The club has grown to a membership of several hundred former students and faculty members who were on the campus 30 or more years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Lella; a son, Harmon W., Fresno and a sister, Mrs. Gertrude McAlister, Arlington, VA.
