My grandmother was the daughter of Joseph Franklin and Mary Douglas (Hinds) Howe. She was married to Ozora Henry Thorp May 24, 1918. He died in 1949 and she continued to run their dairy farm, located on the site of the present-day Monroe Mall. She moved to Madison, Wisconsin in the 1950s and owned an apartment house for student nurses and worked in the Diet Kitchen at the University Hospital. In 1967 she retired and moved back to Monroe where her health declined to the point she could no longer live alone. She then lived with her son Robert and his family near Brodhead until moving to the Pleasant View Nursing home of Monroe in the early 1970s. Her children were Mary Jane, Robert, Eugene, Nancy and Patricia.
