Joseph Adams was born April 2, 1757 at Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, the child of Samuel Adams (1710-1760).
Tradition has it that Joseph had entered Yale in 1773 and left his studies at the break out of the Revolution. He enlisted, May 11, 1775, in Captain Joseph Elliot's (8th) Company, Colonel Israel Putnam's (3rd) Connecticut Regiment. Putnam's Regiment was raised on the first call for troops by the Connecticut Legislature at their special session of April-May, 1775. The regiment was recruited in Windham County, with one Company from New London County. The Regiment marched in May by companies to the camps forming around Boston. It was stationed during the siege in Putnam's Center Division at Cambridge until the expiration of the term of service, December 10, 1775. In July 1775, Putnam's Regiment was adopted as Continental. Joseph was discharged from this regiment, September 28, 1775.
In re-enlisting troops for service in 1776, Putnam's 1775 Regiment was re-organized with Benedict Arnold, then before Quebec, as it's Colonel. Arnold never assumed command and Lieutenant Colonel John Durkee was promoted Colonel, August 12, 1776. Joseph Adams was in Colonel Durkee's Regiment in Captain Wills Clift's Company. This Regiment marched from Boston to New York in April 1776 and was stationed, until September 15th, at Bergen Heights and Paulus Hook, now Jersey City, New Jersey. Later this regiment was ordered to Fort Lee, opposite Fort Washington, and then accompanied General Washington on the retreat through New Jersey. Joseph was discharged from this regiment in New Jersey when his time was out.
Soon after the close of the Revolutionary War, Joseph moved to Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont. There he married, 1792, Abiah Edgerton (1767-1824). That same year, Joseph and Abiah moved to the Lake Champlain Islands and settled in what is now the Town of Grand Isle, Grand Isle County, Vermont. Joseph married (2nd), July 22, 1824, Rebecca (Stark) Hyde, the widow and 2nd wife of Elijah Hyde (1754-1820). Elijah Hyde's 1st wife, Elizabeth (Betsey) Edgerton (1764-1797), was the sister of Abiah Edgerton (1767-1824), Joseph Adams 1st wife.
Joseph Adams served the Town of Grand Isle as Constable, 1812-1818. Joseph died at Grand Isle, Grand Isle County, Vermont, December 21, 1835.
