WEST CALDWELL, N.J. - John M. Gilbreth, 83, formerly of Montclair and a lifelong summer resident of Nantucket, died Wednesday.
He was the husband of Dorothy (Girvan) Gilbreth, who died in 1991.
Mr. Gilbreth attended schools in Montclair and graduated from Princeton University in 1941 with a degree in economics. He was one of 12 children in a family whose lives were featured in the books and movies "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "Belles on their Toes." A Navy veteran of World War II, he was an industrial engineer who worked for McKinse Co., Grace Line Inc. and Mobil Oil Corp., where he was manager of industrial engineering in the international division for 22 years. Mr. Gilbreth was a member of the First Congregational Church of Montclair and the Society for the Advancement of Management. On Nantucket, he was a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club and The Wharf Rat Club. He also was a volunteer with the Montclair Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Surviving are two sons, Peter Gilbreth of Basking Ridge and James Gilbreth of Yarmouthport a daughter, Deborah Harrison of Harwich two sisters, Ernestine Carey of Reedley, Calif., and Jane Heppes of Long View, Wash. three brothers, Fred Gilbreth of Larchmont, N.Y., Daniel Gilbreth of West Caldwell and Robert Gilbreth of Franklin, N.H. three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hinman Hall at Towne Square, Crane's Mill, 459 Passaic Ave., West Caldwell. A private family service will be held on Nantucket in July.
