Irene was a member of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865. She was inducted on January 5, 1981. Her Civil War ancestor was her great-grandfather, William Morris Williams, who enlisted in the Illinois Infantry on September 28, 1861, serving as a Private in Company B, 64th Illinois Infantry, State Volunteers, Yates City, Illinois. He was discharged July 11, 1865, as a Corporal and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Hubbel, Nebraska.
Irene served as President of the Departments of Washington and Alaska multiple times-1988-89; 1998-99; 2002-04; and most recently 2012-2013. She was currently serving as Council Member 2 for the Department and as Senior Vice President of the Tent. She served as National Patriotic Instructor 1987-88 and as National President 1991-92, having been elected at the Indianapolis, Indiana Convention. She was a Certified Parliamentarian and had served as National Parliamentarian 2014-2015 and was currently National Parliamentarian at the time of her death. Irene was a member of the National Board of Trustees for DUVCW at the time of her death.
She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, community events of productions at the Civic Theater, Spokane, Washington, and Christmas concerts.
