Born to Frank and Theresia (Gruber) Baumgartner, Al was raised in the Foxholm, ND area on the family farm. After he served time in the military, he made his home in Minot, ND, living along the banks of the Mouse River in the home of his uncles Stephen and Frank Gruber. His brother Barney also resided there.

"Uncle Al" left us too soon, dying on March 6, 1961.

His funeral services were held at St. Leo's Catholic Church, and burial in the Soldiers Plot of Rosehill Cemetery in Minot.
