CUMMINS DDS., Haldane C., of Palmdale, California departed this life on Sept. 21, 2006, in nearby Lancaster. "Doc" Cummins was born in Sitka, Alaska on March 25, 1918, while his father was stationed there in the Army. Upon separation from military service, his parents settled in Buena Park, California, where he grew up. One of his first jobs was picking berries for Mr. and Mrs. Knott. After graduating from Buena Park High School, he enrolled at Fullerton College where he was a competitive athlete in gymnastics and won the 1938, Southern California state wrestling championship. After graduating from the University of Southern California Dental College in 1942, he enlisted in the Army and served as a Dental Surgeon in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns of World War II. He received a medical retirement as Captain of the Medical Corp. in 1946. Dr. Cummins was the first dentist in Palmdale, opening his office in 1947. He practiced dentistry in Palmdale for fifty-one years, retiring in 1998. An innovative practitioner of his profession, he developed new techniques and lectured on them at the dental college and at dental conventions. When commercially available dental instruments failed to meet his standards, he designed his own and had them cus-
tom made. Doc was also an amateur boat builder and mariner. Over his lifetime he owned over twenty boats, most of which he personally built. In 1980, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of building a boat and sailing it to Alaska, accompanied by his wife Jean as first mate and navigator. Doc was also an avid student of philosophy, history, literature, astronomy and physics. His family and friends spent many companionable hours questioning and discussing these topics with him, always in awe of the breadth and depth of his knowledge. His entertaining recitation of poetry was always a delight. He had a strong sense of humor and always exhorted everyone to "...get at least one good laugh every day". Dr. Cummins was preceded in death by his parents, a younger sister, a former wife, one step-son and two grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Jean, his children, Annie, Larimore and Neil, thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The Cummins family plans a private memorial service and requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a charity of the donors choosing. Email condolences to the family at [email protected]. Chapel of the Valley Mortuary, Palmdale Directors.
