Alvena Marie Williams, daughter of William Zachary and Madeline Gatewood, was born on February 11, 1933 in Oklahoma City. Her family moved to East Texas where she attended Gaston High School in Joinerville, Texas.
She was married to Don Michael Williams, her husband of 65 years, in 1950. She was the mother of two children, Judy Williams Allensworth and Don Williams, Jr., five grandchildren: Chelsea Allensworth Capps, Dylan Allensworth, Zack Allensworth, Chloe Williams, Colin Williams, and two greatgrandchildren, Ashleigh and Aaron Capps.
As a result of Mr. Williams work as an engineer with Texaco, they lived in a variety of places over the years (Mrs. Williams’ favorite was Miami, Fla.) before retiring to Nacogdoches in 1986.
Mrs. Williams was primarily a wife, mother and homemaker, but during her lifetime she worked outside of the home on occasions at a variety of jobs including real estate agent, dental ceramist, English teacher, and, most recently, adult probation officer in Nacogdoches County.
Her hobbies included painting, gardening, and music. She played the piano, the ukulele, the guitar, the flute and the violin. Throughout her life she was active in church and charity work. In Nacogdoches, she served on the board of the SFA Wesley Foundation and volunteered at Love INC. She loved to learn new things and at the age of 48, while still living in Florida, she began her college education at Miami Dade Jr. College and then graduated from Florida International University with a B.A. in English. Later on, while working as a probation officer in Nacogdoches, she decided to learn to speak Spanish and became so fluent that she became a court translator.
Her favorite place to be was at the beach – any beach would do.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother.
She was always optimistic, inquisitive, adventurous, spontaneous (“Kids, it’s a beautiful day today. Let’s skip school and go to the beach!”), and full of life. She taught her family to love God, love life, love others. We are thankful for her example, her witness, her life.
