Born in Kudszir, Austria-Hungary (now Cugir, Romania) in 1881 Franz Joseph Karner. Transylvanian Saxon descent and son of Franz Joseph Karner, Sr. and Rosa Lukacs. He worked as a waterboy at the Kudzir Foundary (now UM Cugir and still in operation) aside his father. His mother and father died early and he immigrated to East Chicago, Indiana by way of Ellis Island in 1907 several months after the Romanian Peasant Revolt of 1907.
He was a foreman roller in the Bar Mill at Inland Steel from about 1907 to right before WWII, then called out of retirement during the War for several years. His shift (night) broke the Bar Mill records for production several times, and it was said that his colleagues recruited employees he had trained to the morning and afternoon shifts. He died in the hospital in 1955 after being in a car accident.
