Obituary from the Thursday, Dec. 30, 1943 edition of the Boston Herald

Head of State G.A.R. Dead
Alden Last Civil War Man in New Bedford

New Bedford, Dec. 29 - George N. Alden, 98, state commander of the [Grand Army of the Republic] and this city's last Civil War Veteran, died today at St. Luke's Hospital from influenza after a short illness.

Born in New Bedford, July 10, 1845, Comdr. Alden lived at 17 Arnold place with his daughter-in-law, Mrs. George N. Alden, Jr. He was active and in good health almost until the time of his death, being out and around New Bedford only last Saturday.

For many years he had been active in this city's Memorial Day observances and last May 30 conducted part of the ceremonies. Two years ago he made his first airplane flight when he flew to attend a GAR encampment in Columbus, O.

His death thins the ranks of the Civil War veterans of this state to 11 men. As senior vice-commander of the state GAR, he succeeded to the commander-ship upon the death of Samuel Snow in January, 1942. He was re-elected commander twice since.

He was also commander of R.A. Pierce Post, 190, G.A.R. of New Bedford. He was mustered into service with the Union Army on Nov. 19, 1864, at the age of 19, serving with the 19th company, Massachusetts infantry. He was mustered out June 27, 1865.

He entered the insurance business in New Bedford and was a partner in a firm for 47 years, until his retirement in 1912.

Surviving besides his daughter-in-law are three nieces…

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 at the Unitarian Church. Members of the Sons of Union Veterans and the American Legion will serve as pallbearers. Legionnaires will also be honorary bearers. Burial will be at the Rural cemetery.
