John Wesley Cooley was born in 1833 in Metamora, Indiana, the child of Isaac and Frances "Fanny" (Ally/Alley) Cooley. He married Lucretia M. Jones on December 9, 1855, in Franklin County, Indiana. The family lived in Arcola, Illinois, then pioneered to Kansas in 1876 and established a homestead between Douglass and Rose Hill, Kansas on the West side of the Walnut River. According to the 1880 U.S. Census, the living children of John Wesley & Lucretia M. Jones Cooley were: John Elisha Cooley, Herschel Isaac Cooley, Charles Ellsworth Cooley, Odie (Otis I. "Bud" Cooley), Lurena "Rena" Cooley Reyer, and Elsena A. "Sena" Cooley. John Wesley Cooley died in May 1880 at the age of 48.
