Gene W. Ziegler, 61, of Springfield died Sunday at St. John's Hospice.

He was born May 2, 1933, in Piasa, the son of Clem McKinley and Janie Mezo Ziegler.

He married Elizabeth "Betty" L. Berkel in 1955.

Mr. Ziegler was an executive pilot for the state of Illinois through five governors, retiring in 1988. He also worked for the Department of Transportation, division of aeronautics, and for Owens, Illinois Glass Co., for 17 years in Alton.

He was a guest entertainer at Illinois Country Opry and New Salem Country Opry. He wrote songs and played guitar, organ and other instruments.

He was a member of Church of Christ and Slip and Skid Fliers Club and former member of Springfield Sunday Fliers Club and Springfield Realtors Association and owner and broker of Gene Ziegler Real Estate.

Survivors: wife, Betty; a daughter, two sons, nine grandchildren, three sisters, two brothers, one aunt and several nices, nephews and cousins.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Staab Funeral Home, Ray Christman officiating.

Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
