Alice Arends, the daughter of Alfred and Eleanor York Hammers, was born December 6, 1926 in Sidney, Iowa. She received her early education from Fremont County country schools, then at Sidney, and later graduated from Farragut High School. Following high school, Alice worked in Omaha, Nebraska for two years.

Alice married Russell Arends on December 1, 1951, in Omaha, Nebraska. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Sutherland, Iowa, where they farmed for five years. They moved to a farm near Primghar in 1957.

Following Russell's death on May 10, 1998, Alice moved to Spencer. Russell and Alice enjoyed fishing and boating and went to Canada to fish for many years. Alice enjoyed going for afternoon car rides, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards and, most of all, loved spending time with her family.

Mrs. Arends passed away at the Spencer Hospital on November 29, 2004, at the age of 77.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell; one sister, Mary Skahill; and one brother, Alfred Hammers, Jr.

She is survived by six children: [redacted]; 13 grandchildren; two sisters: Mildred Hammers of Omaha, Nebraska, and Arlene Skahill and her husband, Jack of Covins, California; special friends, Charles and Mary Schroeder and family; other relatives and friends.

Services in memory of Alice Arends were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 2, 2004, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, Iowa. Rev. Gary Ninas officiated. Casket bearers were Neil Arenas, Ryan Arends, Adam Arenas, Brett Arends, Brandon Arends and Galen Sampson. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa. Warner Funeral Home of Spencer was in charge of the arrangements.
