Earnest Lavelle "Pops" Womack left this earthly world and was greeted at the gates of Heaven on March 25, 2013. He passed peacefully in his beloved West Monroe home where he lived for 58 years. He was surrounded by his children and faithful companion dog, PeeWee. Lavelle was born in Jackson Parish, LA on November 14, 1923 to Claude and Anna Womack. He was the fifth child of eleven children and their first son, living his childhood years in Jackson Parish. He married the love of his life, Earnestine Hinton, in 1944 and eventually settled with his growing family at his current home in West Monroe. He was a member of Cedar Crest Baptist Church. Mr. Womack served his country during WWII in the Navy, spending most of his four year stint as a ship's cook stationed in Alaska and the northwest Pacific Ocean. His ship was run aground in the Aleutian Islands leaving the crew stranded for 3 weeks on a deserted island. Pops was a hardworking man who retired from Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. after 34 years having worked his way from general laborer to senior welder. After retirement he enjoyed another 15 years as a welding inspector on pipelines across the country. Retirement years were also spent traveling with his beloved Earnestine to many places, including 47 of the 50 states and Canada. Their love of family always brought them back to the home they made together where Lavelle enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, mowing, hunting, fishing or just sitting on the front porch watching the cars go by on Arkansas Road. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Earnestine, just 5 months ago. He was also preceded by his father, mother, six sisters, and a grandson, Josh Womack. His surviving family includes sons, Ronnie and wife Sue, Gerald "Bud" Womack and wife Benita; daughters, Cheryl Womack, Christina "Tina" McCraw and husband Chuck, and Colleen Simmermaker and husband Vic; twelve grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers - Delmer, Mize, Nelson and Jerry Womack, as well as a host of extended family. The celebration of life and interment for Mr. Womack will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Antioch Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Quitman, LA, with visitation at 1:00 before the service. Pastor Greg Clark will officiate. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Randy Womack, David Womack, Chad Simmermaker, Clint Simmermaker, Mark Wainwright and Jason Dodd. Donations in his memory may be made to the cemetery fund at Antioch Church or the Building Fund at Cedar Crest Church. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to their parents' devoted caregiver Myrtis Young and Pops' buddy Shannon Slack, as well as Southern Care Hospice and Senior Care Services.
