A real "Georgia Peach," Helen worked hard to support her three sons after the death of their father, Raymond. She later married, Franklin D. Godfrey, a senior chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy.
Helen was a successful local businesswoman in the early development of the Virginia Beach oceanfront in the 1950-60s. She owned and operated the Lawshe Manor, the Sands Motel and Oakley Apartments on Atlantic Ave.
Helen leaves behind her three loving sons, Raymond A. Troutman Jr. and wife Kay of Virginia Beach, Lex W. Troutman and wife Claudia of Norfolk and Stevan L. Troutman of Virginia Beach. She also leaves a stepdaughter, Amy Godfrey of Elizabeth City, N.C. Helen has five grandchildren, Hunter Troutman, Marian Troutman Enright, both of Norfolk, and Stevan Troutman Jr. and Nicole Troutman of Virginia Beach. Helen was predeceased by her sister, Francis Carey formerly of Athens, Ga., and leaves behind a sister, Dorothy Christian of Kannapolis, N.C., in addition to many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be given to The Good Shepherd Church, 1489 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454 or to the Alzheimer's Association.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Good Shepherd Church by the Rev. Lawrence A. Shoberg. Burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather for a celebration of life after the services in the home of Helen's eldest son, Ray, in Virginia Beach. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
