Ruth (Jackman) Abbott, 98, died on Friday, (April 16, 2004) at Heritage Hall West in Agawam, MA, surrounded by her loving family and dedicated caregivers. Ruth was born in Concord, NH on Feb. 11, 1906, and spent most of her adult life in Connecticut and Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her husband, George Abbott; a son, Richard Datson; a daughter, Esther Jane Riach; and a granddaughter, Denise Harrison. She leaves her sons and their wives, Arthur and Margaret Abbott of Farmington, and Jon and Diana Abbott of Chicopee, MA; her daughters, Sylvia Abbott Jucker and her husband, Ueli Jucker of Ellington, and Linda Abbott of Somers; 27 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great grandchildren. A lifelong dedicated reader and writer, her articles and stories appeared in many newspapers and magazines spanning decades. At the age of 86 her book ''Side Trips on a Long Journey'' was published and is now found in libraries, in several States, and in foreign countries. She was well educated and an ardent feminist. Always a champion of the under-dog she remained a social activist until the end. Ruth was proud of her New England heritage, which dated back to the 1630s. Among her ancestors she was especially proud to include Daniel Webster. She was well known for the love and kindness she extended to everyone she met. Her accomplishments were many and varied. As well as an avid reader and writer, she was a gardener, cook, artist, and creator of museum quality quilts and other handwork. A lover of all things beautiful, she herself was a beautiful and unique individual. Her greatest love was for her family in whose hearts she will remain forever. A Memorial Service for family and friends will be held on Friday, April 23, at 7 p.m. at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield.
