Dorthoy Milne Murdock was born to James Milne Murdock and Beatrice Murdock in Massachusetts and grew up in Avon, Connecticut. She was known as Dori to her friends.
Dori was an honor roll student in high school, a National Merit Scholarship honorable mention, and a National Honor Society member. She received a BA from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She studied French and Spanish, in middle and high school, as well as German, Italian, Latin and ancient Greek. After graduating from college, she spent a year in Greece with the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece.
