Melvin G. Marshall, 88, a resident of the Hancock Canal Rd. passed away Saturday August 23, 2014, at Portage Health in Hancock.


He was born on February 21, 1926, in Bergland, MI, a son of the late Aube and Lydia (Maki) Rompanen. As a child, he was adopted by Harold and Florence Marshall. Mel was raised in Ontonagon and Hancock, where he attended the Pewabic and Hancock Schools.


Mr. Marshall enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He then enlisted with the U.S. Army for 21 years serving in the Korean War and Vietnam War.


Following his military service, Mr. Marshall returned to the Copper Country and began working for the Hancock Public Schools as a bus driver and football field custodian, retiring after 23 years.


On April 17, 1952, he was united in marriage in Chicago to the former Edith Maki.


Mel enjoyed building and working on their house and lake shore property and other various projects.


Preceding him in death were his son Marvin, his daughter Pam (Frank) Gasparovich, his granddaughter Kelly Kilmer, his parents, his sisters June Johnson and Grace Wouri and his brothers LeRoy, Earl and Robert.


Surviving are his wife Edith; their daughter Debra (James) Kilmer; grandchildren: Deborah (Jon Payne) Marshall, Liisa (Jeremy) Erskine, Matthew and Andrew Gasparovich; a niece; and nephews.


A memorial service for Mel will be held 1 pm Thursday August 28, 2014, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with L.L.M. Clay Hilman to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock, where the Copper Country Veteran's Association will hold military honors.


Friends may call on Thursday August 28, 2014, from 11 am until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock.
