Earnest was a son of James Morden and Sarah J. McKone. He was born in Ontario and grew up in Manitoba before settling in Battle Creek, Michigan where he worked on the Grand Trunk Western railroad. He was killed in a train wreck in Arizon. Two of his paternal uncles, Robert Leroyd Morden and Arthur Morden were locomotive engineers and lived in Battle Creek. His uncle Arthur Morden was also killed in a train wreck. All three are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
