Bedent Baird was born in Topenemus, New Jersey about 1727, to Andrew Baird and his wife, Sarah Layton/Locke. The Bairds came from Scotland. Bedent's grandfather, John Baird, emigrated from Aberdeen, Scotland, on the ship "Exchange", arriving in N.Y. in 1683, and is believed to have married Mary Bedent. That surname came down in the family for many generations.

Our Bedent belonged to a company called the Jersey Blues and fought in the Revolutionary War. He had a first wife, Sarah Carle, daughter of Jacob Carle (1702-1767) and Rebecca Stites (1707-1770), daughter of William Stites and Mary Hall.

Sarah Carle was born in 1736, and died on June 4, 1778, age 42. She is buried in Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery, FaG memorial number 7633040. Her parents are incorrectly shown as John Layton and Anne Rubyon. She is buried in the area where all the Carles are buried, including her father, Jacob Carle. A large memorial to the Carle family is almost directly in front of Sarah's gravestone.

Bedent and Sarah had a family, but only son, William, who was one of the Executors of Bedent's will, has been identified.

After Sarah's death he married Huldah Fitz Randolph in late 1778, and they lived in German Flats, N.Y. They had the following children:

Sarah Baird, born 1786/87, married February 7, 1799 to Solomon Munro; died May 5, 1857 in Michigan.

Bedent Baird, Jr., born about 1788/89, married Catherine Quackenbush, moved to Monroe County, N.Y. His FaG memorial is number 20549721 in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Fairport, Monroe County, New York.

Hannah Baird, born about 1790; married September 30, 1810 to Matthias Lain/Lane.

Samuel Baird, born 1794/95; married Mariah/Polly.

Permelia Baird, born January 16, 1796; married Nathan Gallup on January 1, 1815; lived in Summit, Schoharie County, N.Y.; died December 13, 1880.

Huldah Baird, born about 1799.

Mary Baird, born about 1802.

Margaret Baird, born June 24, 1806; married first Oliver Moore, Jr., on July 1, 1832; married secondly David Bice after Oliver died; after her second husband died, she moved to Logan County, Ohio, where her daughter lived, and died there February 23, 1887. (She was my 3rd great grandmother.)

Bedent was 79 when his last child, Margaret, was born. His wife was 36.

On January 9, 1822, he and his wife, Huldah, for $559.91 sold some land in Summit, N.Y. to Blandina Bruyn. Bedent was then 95 years old!

Bedent made a Will, dated October 12, 1815, but not Probated until March 23, 1827. It mentions the following family members:

"Wife Huldah
Sons Samuel and Bedent
Daughters Sary (Sarah), wife of Solomon Monro;
Hanner (Hannah), wife of Mathias Lain;
Permelia, wife of Nathan Gallup;
Huldah, named after her mother;
and Mary and Margaret.
Executors: Wife and son William (son from his first marriage).
Witnesses: John Hall and Nancy Lincoln
Signed: Bedent Baird"

The name Baird is also known as Beard. Beard's Hollow, N.Y., a part originally of Summit and Richmondville was probably settled by this family.
