Austin Heaton Carr, 95, of Winston­-Salem, retired Senior Executive Vice President of Long, Haymes & Carr Advertising died March 29, 2016 at his home. Mr. Carr was born in Durham, NC, June 23, 1920, the son of Austin Heaton Carr, Sr. and Laura Noell Carr Chapman.

He attended Woodberry Forest School, Woodberry Forest, VA and was a 1942 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the 9th U.S. Air Force in the European Theatre during World War II and was a member of the first Air Force fighter group to operate on the continent after D­Day. He retired from the service in 1945 as a Captain.

After three years with William Esty Advertising in New York, where he became Assistant to the President, he moved to Winston­Salem in 1949 to join the Mengel Company. In 1954 he joined Long­Haymes Advertising, which later became Long, Haymes & Carr, one of the largest advertising agencies in the Southeast. Mr. Carr retired from Long, Haymes & Carr in 1986.

He was a member of the Winston­-Salem Rotary Club, The Society of the Cincinnati, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Old Town Club, and the Coral Bay Club in Morehead City.

He served on the board of the Austin Heaton Company in Durham, as a board member and President of the Winston­-Salem Visiting Nurse Service, and on the boards of the Winston­Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony, the Episcopal Church's Brown's Summit Center, The Civic Music Association of Winston­Salem, The Winston-­Salem Operetta Association, Amos Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital, Children's Home Society of North Carolina, The Art Society of the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh, and as a trustee of St. Mary's School in Raleigh and Summit School in Winston­-Salem.

In 1998, his friend and college roommate, Frank Borden Hanes, Sr. established the Distinguished Austin H. Carr Professorship in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in his honor.

Mr. Carr married Mildred Borden Cobb of Goldsboro in 1957, who survives along with his children, Laura Noell Carr of Winston­-Salem and Donnell Borden Carr of Truckee, California; a daughter­in­law, Hale Sneeden Carr; a grandson, Austin Christopher Carr; and granddaughter, Arabella Grace Carr.

A brother, Charles Noell Carr, died in 2000.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston­Salem and the family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Arbor Acres in Robinson Hall. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Carr Family plot in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.
