Born January 20, 1929, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Ernest Edward Hewitt and Mary Edith Beard Hewitt (later Edwards).
A graduate of Balls Creek High School, Bill married the love of his life, the former Dade Aldridge, on December 23, 1949, in York, SC. They were married for 47 years until Dade’s death in 1997. He was also predeceased by his youngest son, Philip.
Bill began working as a carpenter while he was still in high school and became well-known over the years as a custom home builder and the owner of Hewitt Construction, Inc. He built hundreds of high-quality homes, which he would happily point out all over the county for his family’s entertainment.
Bill enjoyed jokes and humor, bluegrass music, and especially visiting flea markets and yard sales. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling, filling his retirement years with trips to the beach and dozens of bus tours all over the U.S.
He is survived by what he always referred to as his “wonderful family” including daughter, Dawn Hewitt of Newton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Kathy Hewitt of Hickory, and Sam and Jan Hewitt of Sandy Springs, GA; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a sister, Rita Stokes of Newton; and a brother, Ken Hewitt of Newton.
A service of remembrance will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016, at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory.
