Franklin was engaged to a woman from Brockway when he fell from a freight train and lost a leg. Franklin never married for whatever reason. He was fitted with a cork leg and carried a small ballpeen hammer which he used to pound the nails back in on his leg when they worked loose. (Hammer was in the possession of Connie M. Waite until her death). Franklin eventually died on the operating table at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center and afterwards his brain was removed and used for medical research, (This is anecdotal as passed down through the family).
Franklin was a District Vice President of the local Miners Union. He is buried in the family plot and the grave is marked by a large marker provided by the Miners Union. (See photo attached)
