Jonathan was raised in Harrison, NY where his father, William, was a farmer. During the American Rev. he enlisted in the NY Volunteers; after the "Peace", on 15 July 1783, he brought his wife, Mary, and six children to Granville, Nova Scotia as Loyalist settlers. Their home in Karsdale still stands.
