USMC, Retired Sept. 10, 1921- April 1, 2016 Colonel Williams P. Brown, USMC (Ret.), of Orange, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016, with his family by his side. He was born September 10, 1921.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Violet Riner of Orange; his children, Todd and wife, Sherri, of Louisa, Terri and husband, Dan Fincannon, of Taylorsville, N.C., Tyler and wife, Catherine, of Charlottesville, Tim of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

He was the son of the late, Ollie Perry Brown of Orange and Everett Williams Brown of Lakewood, N.J. and brother of the late, Dr. Julia May Brown of Madison, Wis.

Colonel Brown retired from the Marine Corps in June 1974 after serving for more than 32 years. He was among the Greatest Generation and volunteered for service following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He saw service as a Naval Aviator in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, 11 Air Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit Citations, and campaign medals from three wars. Col. Brown last served as Chief of Staff, First Marine Aircraft Wing, Iwakuni, Japan in 1973-74, which numbered approximately 8,000 officers and Marines and several hundred fixed wing jet aircraft and helicopters. He served in the same flight squadron with baseball legend Ted Williams in Korea. Upon retiring, the Commandant of the Marine Corps personally thanked him for a job well done.

After retiring, Col. Brown became involved in the local community. He served as the Coordinator and a Director of the Orange County Economic Development Corporation for many years and later became Director of the Orange County Public School Bus system for seven years. Col. Brown was a Captain of the Orange County Rescue Squad, a member of the Orange Rotary Club, and actively involved in the extension of the runway of the Orange Airport through his service with the Orange County Airport Authority. He built his dream home, Eaglenest, in Orange and enjoyed the rest of his years being a devoted husband, father and grandfather, a gardener, and an avid University of Virginia sports fan.

He lived his life as an example to others. His unspoken creed defined who he was: whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is excellent and praiseworthy. This is the way he chose to live. Job well done, Colonel.
