Robert C. Bazzell died during the Civil War sometime between June 30, 1863 (when he was last documented alive) and October 31, 1863 (when the campaign ended). I believe he possibly may have been injured at Chickamauga (or around that time period) and was sent away to a hospital location where he died, probably in October. (Record states that he died in Russell, Ala.) His widow filed a claim in November regarding his death and it is not likely that she could have afforded the cost to bring his body home.

Robert C Bazzel served as a PVT in Co K of the 53rd Alabama Partisan Rangers (Cavalry).

"Primarily assigned to Phillip D. Roddey's command in the Tennessee Valley in northern Alabama in 1863, the 53rd participated in a number of fights in that area. In February of 1863, Companies I and K, were temporarily attached to Brig. Gen. Frank Armstrong's brigade under Gen. Earl Van Dorn, taking part in the fierce fighting at Thompson's Station, Tennessee where they took their first battle casualties. With the regiment being re-united in early April, the 53rd played a part in Forrest's pursuit and capture of Col. A. D. Streight's raiders in early May of 1863, and were engaged in the fight at Iuka, Mississippi in July. In the fall of 1863, the 53rd remained primarily in northeast Alabama, scouting back and forth across the Tennessee River with Roddey. They again took casualties at Athens, Alabama on January 26, 1864, prior to being assigned to Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee at Dalton, Georgia, preparatory to the Atlanta Campaign." - Bob McClendon (2006)
