Obie was born to John Alexander Smith and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gregg. In the 1890s, Obie and his family were living in Kansas, where he met his first wife, Carrie May Lanning. They married in 1892 in Kansas at the ages of 19 and 17 respectively. To this union, 3 known children were born: William Inman Smith, Ralph Oliver Smith, and Louisa Smith. Only Ralph lived to adulthood. Carrie contracted consumption (tuberculosis) and passed away in 1899 (unsure if it was Kansas or not). By 1902, Obie is in Los Angeles, where he meets his second wife, Lula Bell McMordie. To this union, a son, Fay Lawrence Smith, is born in 1904. Sadly, he passed away 2 1/2 years later. Obie and Lula divorced in the 19teens. In 1916, Obie marries for a third time to Dorothy Omole Todd in Riverside Co, California. To this union, two daughters were born, with only one daughter, also named Dorothy, living to adulthood. Obie and Dorothy were Christian Scientists. On March 22, 1948, Obie was struck by an automobile. He initially refused treatment. He went to the hospital a few days later where he died from complications. He was cremated and his remains are in an unmarked grave.
