A story I was told by my grandmother was that around the time of the Civil War, the Deeds boys (likely Jacob, Albert, and Joseph) were out hunting one day. One of the boys put his rifle down against something, another tripped over it, and it shot Joseph, the youngest, in the leg, causing him to lose his leg. My recollection is that she said it was Albert's gun.
