Lynwood Malcolm "Skip Compton, 81, of Union Hall, Virginia, formerly of Princeton, West Virginia, died peacefully in the company of his younger son Mark on Monday, April 4, 2016. A true native son of West Virginia, Skip was born August 15, 1934, in the coal town of Rhodell, West Virginia, the son of Okey Delone "Bus" Compton and Mary Elizabeth Malcolm Compton. After his birth, the family eventually moved to Princeton, West Virginia, where he attended high school and met his eventual bride and love of his life, Gayle Lilly. Following service in the Army where, as a Sergeant in the 14th Armored Calvary Regiment, he was stationed in West Germany, Skip returned to the United States to marry his wife and best friend of 58 years, Gayle, in a beautiful wedding in Princeton. After graduation from Stetson University in Florida, Skip joined the S.S. Kresge Company, later to become Kmart Corporation, where he quickly rose to the rank of District Manager with oversight of more than 30 department stores in the burgeoning South Florida market. In 1981, Skip retired from Kmart, returning to Princeton, helping grow the family businesses which included Compton Construction Company, Princeton Ready Mix, and Interstate Partnership. While continuing many of his responsibilities with the companies up until his death, Skip "semi" retired to his favorite place, a home located on a secluded island on Smith Mountain Lake. An avid enthusiast of a wide range of activities, including the study of history, gardening, horseback riding, and fishing, Skip was a faithful member of a number of organizations including the Masons, Knights Templar, Rotary Club, and the National Rifle Association. Skip was a life-long unabashed fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers. Skip was preceded in death by two brothers, Burl M. Compton and Milton C. "Mick" Compton, and his sister, Katie Compton Prinzbach. Skip is survived by his wife, Gayle Lilly Compton of Union Hall, Virginia; his two sons, Dr. David M. Compton and his wife Emmy of Wellington, FL, and Mark D. Compton of Myrtle Beach, SC; and a brother Dr. Dudley Delone Compton and wife Dorthea of Charlotte, NC. In addition, Skip is survived by three grandchildren, Johnathan Matthew Compton, Nicholas Alexander Compton and Victoria Lilly Compton, as well as four great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Judy Compton and Joan Compton, and one brother-in-law, Don Prinzbach. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM, Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Scott Sears officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Park Cemetery in Princeton. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 PM until the service hour on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Skip was known for his infectious smile and contagious good humor - a common Compton family trait.

BROTHERS SHED A LITTLE LIGHT ON TINY COAL TOWN, RHODELL, WV (AP) - Charity begins at home for two brothers whose $41,000 donation made a tiny coal town's future a little brighter. Native sons Skip and Mickey Compton of Compton Construction Company promised the money Wednesday, a day before Union Power Co. was to unplug 45 street lights over a deliquent $1,249.50 bill. "We felt it was something we had to do," said Skip Compton, 53. "We didn't want any publicity."
