Sarah "Sanky" Stegall Norwood, 94, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Cardinal Care Center. Born in Luebo, Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo), Africa on November 30, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Carroll Richard and Sarah Valdes Galves Stegall. As a daughter of Presbyterian missionaries, she spent her early childhood years in central Africa. Upon returning to the United States, Mrs. Norwood attended Montreat Normal School in Montreat, Peace College in Raleigh and received her BA degree from Flora Macdonald College in Red Springs (now St. Andrews in Laurinburg). She also attended Western Carolina University. Mrs. Norwood met and married her husband, Wiley Emmett Norwood, while living in Texas.

Mrs. Norwood retired from the Juvenile Evaluation Center in Swannanoa and previously worked for the NC Employment Security Commission, the Children's Home Society, the WNC Sanatorium and the American Red Cross. She was a member of Pinecrest Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Norwood was a former member of Friendship Presbyterian Church in Black Mountain where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and sang in the church choir. She was skilled in handicrafts, counted cross-stitch and crocheting and was known for her Christmas "snowflakes" and angels. Equally enjoyable to her was to teach and encourage others in the fundamentals and pleasures of needle-work.

Mrs. Norwood is survived by two sons, Grover Carroll Norwood and wife Jill, of Fulshear, TX, John Stephen Norwood and wife Debbie, of Hendersonville; a sister, Virginia S. Boyle, of Black Mountain; three grandchildren, Graham Norwood, of Fulshear, TX, Capt. David Norwood, of Ft. Hood, TX, and John Norwood, of Raleigh.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Norwood was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Carroll R. Stegall, Jr. and a granddaughter, Sarah Joy Norwood.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, July 9, 2010 at Pinecrest Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles Evans, III officiating. A graveside service will follow at 4PM at Mountain View Memorial Park in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the church prior to the funeral.
